. complete bay area news coverage starts right now. this is the 10:00 news on kutv channel 2. a successful first day of the weekend closure of the golden gate bridge. piece by piece, crews put that median barrier together. that part of the project is done, but there is still a lot of work to do before monday morning's commute. good evening, i'm ken wayne. >> hello everyone, i'm heather holmes. new developments to tell you about within last hour on the golden gate bridge closure and installation of this new movable safety bareie. from news chopper 2 you can see individual pieces of the collision barrier being connected. all of the pieces are now many place, but more work lays ahead. here is what is remaining on

the to-do list, running zipper trucks over the segmented to mick sure that the positioning and tension is right. 15 minutes ago we saw one of the trucks move the new bareie into formation. crews will also restripe lanes and fill holes for thoseole pylons placed by hand that are no longer needed. eye live look at the bridge from the toll plaza, looking north towards the marin county side. can you see the bareie there running right down the middle of the road. closure obviously affects people commuting from the city and marin county. >> with enough warning and planning people have moved to a different type of transportation, ktvu's katie utehs is live with more on how people are getting around during the unprecedented bridge closure. >> reporter: it appears that people are heeded the warnings about the closure. i poke with a chp officer who tells us me that in marin county they have only tuned a few folks away and the tourists today got to the bridge whoever they could, walking, biking or

bus and locals, they hopped on the ferry. >> it was great. wonderful way to commute. >> reporter: navigating a blocked off golden gate bridge. >> you just have to plan around things. >> reporter: best route seems to be by boat with expanded service on the golden gate ferry system. >> we had twice as many appearances as typical weekend. >> reporter: traveling across the bay almost as smooth as the water, just some slowdown as people tried to purchase fares. >> people couldn't manage the machines. so with we got our tickets in the nick of time. we wanted to come, because we were buying an engagement ring. >> reporter: as love drew them into san francisco, the closure of that iconic bridge forced some to prove their devotion. >> i have been through a couple of road closures. >> reporter: he and his friend left their car at a roadblock. >> we're going to take a bus and try to see the bridge and drive back again.

>> we have about average ridership on the buses. >> reporter: these entrances in marin county staffed dozens of officers to help with traffic control. >> this is unchartered territory for us. it has never been done before and this is learning as we go. >> reporter: the weekend shutdown is disappointing for unsuspecting travelers. >> it caused a little bit, but you have to do some work. >> reporter: it should be complete in time for monday morning commuters. >> it's a deadline that we will definitely meet if not earlier. >> reporter: the ferries also running later tonight, the routes to larksburg goes until 1:00 a.m. and the sausalito route goes until about 11:15. >> thank you, katie. well, alternate routes include the richmond and bay bridge. traffic has been slow at times on both of those bridges when we checked throughout the day, but here is a live look at the conditions there at the bay bridge toll plaza and it looks

like pretty smooth sailing there. stay with ktvu news through the weekend as we bring you the latest construction updates including starting at 7:00 a.m. tomorrow morning with mornings on 2 and have full coverage of the next progress report that will be released tomorrow morning. police in san francisco are trying to found whoever shot and killed four men found in a stolen car last night. it happened in the hayes valley neighborhood, an area that residents say had recently seen little crime or violence. ktvu's john sasaki tells us how gunfire spread across the neighborhood. >> reporter: page and laguna in san francisco is a busy intersection where historic victorian homes line the street. >> to get a car or éber. >> reporter: not a place that one would expect to see bullet holes marking a storefront. >> doesn't feel as safe as it once was. you don't expect to have a drive-by shooting and four people dead. >> reporter: at about 10:00 friday night someone drove up next to this double.

>> parked black honda and started hearing. >> you could not not hear it. it sounded like grenades. >> reporter: the president of the zen center across the street was at home nearby when the shooting happened. >> this may be a particular situation between people, where there was some insult or injury or you know greed or whatever that caused this particular thing to happen. >> reporter: a day after the incident, police say they don't know what the motive was. while the is crime scene was active lt. chaplin said there were more than ten shots fired. >> right now we're trying to find out and check on the residents to make sure that no one inside was hit, but there were a lot of shots fired. >> reporter: no bystanders were hurt, but one bullet hit someone's refrigeratorror. all of the four men were pronounced dead at scene. >> at 10:00 at night we'll go outside and move our cars, you know? it's not going to be the same.

we could have been in the line of fire had we been at the wrong place at wrong time. >> reporter: now there is a mall, but growing memorial with a sign that says "drive-by, four people, rest many peace." a gunman may have been seen living the area in a silver scion car. >> the lieutenants is they are not yet calling it a gang- related shooting although the gang task force is investigating. john sasaki, ktvu channel 2 news. a motorcyclist sideswiped a car and hit a pedestrian at mcalister street and van ness avenue. the pedestrian is a 62-year-old asian woman who suffered a minor injury and was not hospitalized, but the motorcyclist died from his injuries. >> a person was hit and killed by a call train on the peninsula today. it happened at about 9:10 this

morning just a mile south of millbrae station. the caltrain spokesperson says that no one on the train was injured. caltrain set up a bus bridge between the stations at burlingame, it took until 1:45 for full-service to be restored. there is no word on the identity of that victim. developing news out of paris, tonight where there is a worldwide manhunt for this woman, a fourth person french police believe was involved in recent terror attacks. also today, during high-level briefings, frenches police were told terror sleeper cells have been activated over the last 24 hours and that officers should erase their social media presence and carry their weapons with them at all-times. this comes as france and its supporters around the world are mourning those who lost their lives this week. amy kellog with the latest from paris. >> reporter: thousands of people leave flowers outside of a kosher supermarket during a vigil to honor the four hostage who were killed at store friday.

the large crowd included members of the local muslim and jewish communities in a show of solidarity after a frightening week. >> we're in one of the most civilized countries in the world. there is always signed kind of threat. personally i feel endangers sometimes. i don't feel safe. >> reporter: meanwhile a global search is on for hayat boumeddiene and police believe they say have been involved in the murder of a francisco policewoman and the attack of the store and describe her as armed and dangerous, but some reports say they may have fled to syria, possibly before the attacks may have started. her her allergid accomplice and common-law husband was killed during the raid by the police on the store. >> i was born in france and if muslims hadn't been attacked elsewhere i wouldn't have done this. >> the brother of a police

officer killed in the attacks are calling for calm and jason. >> to all the racists and anti- semites, extremists must not be confused with muslims, crazy people of no color, nor religion. >> there have been massive demonstrations across the country to show support for the victims and a big unite rally is planned for tomorrow, expecting to draw as many as a million people. in paris, amy kellog, fox news. meantime the state department this weekend updated a global caution warning american citizens of a heightened risk of terror attacks and kidnappings in many parts of the world. a spokeswoman passed along word from paris what officials consider to be under increased threat. >> the government of france has extended the heightened terrorist alerts to international schools and other regions to make changes as appropriate. this was simply passing on what the government there had provided. nothing has changed in terms of our posture otherwise and our

embassies and consulates remain up and running. >> attorney general eric holder is scheduled to travel to paris this weekend to attend a meeting with the french interior minister. >> the attacks in france are expected to be a topic of discussion when britain prime minister cameron visited the white house. he is among the world leaders planning to attend the anti- terrorism rally in paris. the white house says cameron and president obama will share a working dinner later this week on thursday and meet in the oval office on friday to discuss topics ranging from islamic militants to economic growth to russia's actions in ukraine. back here in the bay area, just a beautiful bay area sunset, but stagnant air still lingers over the air, prompting another spare-the-air day tomorrow. so that means no wood burning for another 24 hours. air quality officials say pollution levels are expected to be unhealthy. it will be the bay area's tenth

showerses up in parts the north bay, especially the northern portions of sonoma county and definitely clouds for the part of the barack. coming up i will break down showers chances and when more significant rain could show up on the long-range weather maps. a body was recovered from lake merce yesterday by the san francisco fire department. a department pokesperson told us two kayakers discovered the bodies in some reeds in the north end of the lake. two divers were called in to move the body across the lake to the shore of harding park where it could be removed and taken to the medical examiner's office. there is no word on the victim's identity or cause of death. federal food and drug administration officials confirmed that samples fruit from a california apple supplier have the same trains of listeria associate with the recent outbreak of the disease. the company of bakersfield says it's now recalling all of its granny smith and gala apples

with a suppose and the international olympic committee is expected to announce its decision in 2017. salvage crews in the java sea have recovered the tail section from the crashed air asia jet, but have no recovered the black boxes. >> reporter: off the coast of borneo, 20 miles from why it lost contact the tail fin of flight q-8501 is brought to the surface. the indonesia navy used an inflatable device to lift it up from the depth of 100'. it was located in the java sea wednesday by an unmanned underwater vehicle. officials also confirmed that distinctive pings have been picked up coming from its black boxes, which still haven't been found. it is thought that they play have become detached from the rear of the plane. finding them are shed more light on what led to the crash. what is important to know is

. day one of the golden gate bridge closure is over now. now the focus turns to the next step. forever now buses are the only vehicles crossing the bridge. it's expected to be that way until 4:00 a.m. on monday. as ktvu's cristina rendon reports crews are hard at work to make sure that the barrier is completed on time for the workweek commute. >> reporter: before the early morning fog appears crews were already at work laying down pieces of bareie on the golden gate bridge and by sunrise, pedestrians and travelers caught a glimpse of history. >> you can see what it's like. >> reporter: on the first full day of the closure, crews nick connected the entire safety bareie, stretching across 11,00 0' and the bridge's chief engineer says the work is far from over. >> we still have quite a way to go, but we are very much on
